James S. Morton (1829-1864)
James St. Clair Morton was a brigadier general in the Union Army and an army engineer. He commanded the Pioneer Brigade at Stones River and Chickamauga, where he was wounded. Promoted brigadier general of volunteers, he was superintending engineer of the defenses of Nashville, Murfreesboro, Clarksville and Fort Donelson. In June 1864 he was killed leading an assault at Petersburg. He wrote several books on fortifications.
