Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816)

Gouverneur Morris was a statesman, diplomat, and financial expert who helped plan the U.S. decimal coinage system. A member of the Continental Congress and the New York Provincial Congress, Morris helped draw up both the U.S. and the New York state Constitution. He later served as the U.S. minister to France and as a U.S. senator. Morris lost his leg when he fell from a carriage. This lithograph was engraved by Alonzo Chappel and published in 1863 by Johnson, Fry & Co.
