John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916)
John Singleton Mosby attended the University of Virginia until he was imprisoned for shooting a fellow student. He pursued the legal profession and was admitted to the bar. During the Civil War, Mosby raised his own brigade of raiders and wreaked havoc in the Union army. Ironically, his later friendship with Grant earned him an appointment as U.S. consul to Hong Kong.
