James Mott (1788-1868)
James Mott was a reformer, abolitionist, and husband of Lucretia Coffin Mott. After the fugitive-slave law was passed in 1850 the Motts opened their home as a shelter for runaway African Americans. Mott was appreciative of his wife's speaking talents as well as sympathetic to her cause and accompanied her on her preaching tours.
