Francis Murphy (1836-1907)

Francis Murphy, born in Ireland, was a temperance reformer. In 1870 Murphy was jailed for a drunken assault. Cyrus Sturdevant, a ship's captain, visited him in his cell and Murphy signed a total-abstinence pledge. Murphy began lecturing on temperance all across North America and Great Britain. In all he obtained 12,000,000 signatures to his pledge.
