Henry C. Murphy (1810-1882)
Henry Cruse Murphy was a lawyer, politician, and scholar. Murphy was elected mayor of Brooklyn at age thirty-one. He was a U.S. representative from New York (1843-45 and 1847-49). In 1857 Murphy was appointed minister to the Netherlands and became a specialist in Dutch history and literature. He obtained the legislation necessary to build the Brooklyn Bridge and was president of the private company that constructed it.
