William Wilkins (1779-1865)
William Wilkins was a judge, U.S. representative and senator, minister to Russia, and secretary of war under John Tyler. In 1831 he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Senate (1831-34). Wilkins was appointed U.S. minister to Russia (1834-35), but he was unsuccessful in negotiating treaties. President John Tyler named him secretary of war (1844-45). Wilkins's main interest was in territorial expansion and in annexing Texas.
