Charles Wilkes (1798-1877)
Charles Wilkes was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy. He entered in 1818 as a midshipman and in 1838 headed a squadron of ships and scientists to Antarctica. In 1861 Wilkes arrested Mason and Slidell, two Confederate commissioners, which precipitated the Trent Affair: Wilkes arrested the men on a British steamer, the "Trent," and they were held in Boston for several months. As a result, Wilkes became a national hero. During the Civil War Wilkes was promoted to commodore (1862). When he retired he was named rear admiral (1866).
