Maria Pray, Mrs. Barney Williams (1828-1911)

Maria Pray was a New York-born actress and singer. At age fifteen she joined the corps de ballet at the Chatham Theatre in New York. The widow of Charles Westayer, she married the Irish actor Barney Williams in 1850. She was a great help to her husband's career. They performed in San Francisco in 1854 and traveled to England in 1855. Mrs. Williams made her New York debut in 1867 at the French Theatre, as Caeserine Clapier in the French vaudeville "Le Mari dans du Coon." She then appeared throughout the U.S. in starring roles. Her father was Samuel Pray, who had worked for the Broadway Theatre until he was tragically killed there in an accident in 1848. Her sister was Mrs. William Jermyn Florence (Malvina Pray), another well known actress.
