James H. Wilson (1837-1925)

James Harrison Wilson was a star in the Civil War: he was made a major general a mere five years after his graduation from West Point (1860). An engineer with no cavalry experience, he was nonetheless appointed head of the newly-established Cavalry Bureau in Washington (1864). At Selma, Wilson led a celebrated raid and routed Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was for the first time outmaneuvered by Union cavalry. Wilson was brevetted for Selma (major general in the regular army, 1865). Wilson wrote many books and articles, including a biography of Ulysses S. Grant.
