John A. Winslow (1811-1873)

John Ancrum Winslow was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy. Winslow became a midshipman when he was sixteen and fought in the Mexican War. In 1862 he was sent to the "Kearsage," a third-class man-of-war that did not warrant a commander of such high rank. Off the coast of France in 1864 the "Kearsage" encountered the Confederate "Alabama," commanded by Raphael Semmes. Winslow was conducting Sunday services when the "Alabama" overtook them. Although the sloops-of-war were equal in men and guns, the "Kearsage" triumphed, sinking the Confederate ship. Amid great acclaim in the United States, Winslow was promoted to commodore. He was made rear admiral in 1870.
