Thomas Francis Meagher was born in Ireland. Banished by the Irish government to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) for sedition, Meagher escaped to the U.S. in 1852. He became a lawyer, lecturer, and newspaper editor. In the Civil War he was commissioned to lead the Irish Brigade, which he raised, and he became a brigadier general of volunteers. By May 1863 his troops were decimated. After the war he served as acting governor of Montana until, drinking, he fell off a riverboat and drowned.
