Catherine Glynne, Mrs. William E. Gladstone (1813?-1900)

Born Catherine Glynne, Mrs. Gladstone was the wife of William Gladstone, Liberal prime minister of England in 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, and 1892-94. The two were married at the Gladstone family home of Hawarden, in north Wales. Together with her husband, Mrs. Gladstone worked for the well-being of prostitutes. During the American Civil War, when British cotton workers lost their jobs because of the blockade of Confederate ports, the Gladstones provided work on the Hawarden estate.
