Annie Hughes (1869-1954)
Annie Hughes was a popular comic actress. In the 1890s she played the lead in "Sweet Nancy," a dramatisation of Rhoda Broughton's popular book, at the Lyric Theatre. So successful was her creation of the character that when Hughes became ill the show was forced to close as the public would accept no substitute. Later in life Hughes was popular on Broadway, where she performed in eleven shows between 1906 and 1920.
