Sarah Bush Lincoln in Old Age

The president's stepmother is about seventy-seven in this portrait, which is based on a photograph made in 1865. (The artist, T. Johnson, may have added the hint of a smile.) At thirty-one, "Sally" became the second Mrs. Lincoln and encouraged young Abe with his lessons.
