Christine Nilsson (1843-1921)
Christine Nilsson (born Kristina Jonasdotter) was a Swedish soprano. In 1864 she made her debut at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris, as Violetta. Nilsson debuted in London the same year. She performed internationally in "La Traviata," " Hamlet," "Marriage of Figaro," and "Faust," among others. In 1883 she traveled to New York for the opening of the Metropolitan Opera House and sang in the inaugural performance of "Faust." Nilsson's voice, which ranged two and a half octaves, was not large but pure and flexible. In this carte de visite, from the Bergamasco studio in St. Petersburg, she poses in a peasant costume, probably as Marguerite.
