Ormsby M. Mitchel (1809-1862)
Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel was a major general of volunteers and a famous astronomer. After he was graduated from West Point he set up observatories for Harvard and the Navy, and smaller observatories in New York and Ohio. At the outbreak of the Civil War President Lincoln tapped Mitchel and he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers. He commanded a division of Buell's Army and made a famous railroad raid in Alabama in 1862. Promoted to major general, Mitchel crossed swords with Buell and requested permission to resign, which was refused. Mitchel then died of yellow fever.
