Russell Sage (1815-1906)
Russell Sage was a wealthy financier. He amassed a fortune through banking and stock speculation. Sage controlled several Western railroads and the Western Union Telegraph Company. When he died his fortune passed to his widow, Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage (1828-1918), who became a great philanthropist, establishing the Russell Sage College and the Russell Sage Foundation.
