Dick Sands (1840-1900)
Dick Sands was born in Berstal, Yorkshire, England. He was a clog dancer. Sands made his first appearance on stage in January, 1859, with Bryant's Minstrels in New York. Sands wrote "Dick Sands' Irish Songster" in 1876 and "Dick Sands' Irish Jig, Clog, and Dance Book" (1879-80), which included the first written instructions for clog dancing.
