John Sartain (1808-1897)

John Sartain was an American engraver and publisher who introduced pictorial illustration as a distinctive feature of American periodicals. He was born in London and came to America in 1830 with his new bride. Sartain is considered the father of mezzotint engraving. This engraving is after an ambrotype by Henry Sartain (1833-1895), his son.
