Augustus Schell (1812-1884)
Augustus Schell was a lawyer, railroad magnate, and Democrat politician. He began as an expert in the new field of corporation law. A good friend of Cornelius Vanderbilt, he became financially involved in several railroad lines. Schell rose in the Tammany organization until the downfall of Tweed, when he became Grand Sachem (1872) and reorganized Tammany. Schell was an unsuccessful candidate for several political offices.
