Nast Caricature of General Winfield Scott (1786-1866)

Winfield Scott is shown here in uniform, probably in 1861, his final year as commander of the U.S. Army. Scott was the general in chief of the army during the Mexican War and briefly at the beginning of the Civil War. This is a Thomas Nast caricature of Scott. Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was an American cartoonist who immigrated from Germany, best known for his attack on the political machine of William M. "Boss" Tweed in New York City in the 1870s.
