John Sedgwick (1813-1864)

John Sedgwick was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army. He was graduated from West Point in 1837 and served in the Seminole and Mexican wars. Sedgwick began the Civil War as a lieutenant colonel but was quickly appointed brigadier general of volunteers. He was wounded at Glendale and Antietam and then appointed major general in 1862. He commanded at Spotsylvania where he was killed by a sharpshooter. Sedgwick was thought to be the best loved of all the higher officers in the army. He was known as "Uncle John" among his soldiers. This carte de visite is an engraved portrait of Sedgwick which was published by Charles Taber & Co. of Massachusetts.
