Dio Lewis (1823-1886)
Dioclesian Lewis was a temperance lecturer and a pioneer in physical education. His popular book, "The New Gymnastics for Men, Women, and Children," was published in 1864. Lewis was an activist in advocating physical education for girls and women. He is credited with beginning the temperance movement during a lecture on December 23, 1873, at Hillsboro, Ohio. It was the birth of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.
