Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868)
Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze was a painter, brought to the United States from Germany when he was nine. He became the link between what is known as the Dusseldorf School of historical painting and the American School. He is best known for an historical painting, "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (1851). His realistically drawn, patriotic paintings were extremely popular.
