Benjamin R. Tillman (1847-1918)

Benjamin Ryan Tillman was the governor of South Carolina from 1890-94 and a U.S. senator from 1895-1918. Tillman established Clemson College and Winthrop College while governor of South Carolina. He was an outspoken populist and segregationist who was censured by the Senate in 1902 after assaulting another senator on the Senate floor.
