John B. S. Todd (1814-1872)
John Blair Smith Todd was a brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army and first cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln. He attended West Point (1832-37) and fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars. In 1856 Todd resigned the military and became a trader along the Missouri River. He was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers in 1861 but took a leave of absence when he was elected to Congress as a Democratic delegate from Dakota Territory (1861-62 and 1863-64). Todd was governor of Dakota Territory from 1869 to 1871.
