Joseph G. Totten (1788-1864)
Joseph Gilbert Totten was a brevet major general in the Union Army. An early graduate of West Point (1805), he fought in the War of 1812, and in the Mexican War he was Winfield Scott's chief engineer. Totten was brevetted brigadier general in 1847. When the Civil War broke out he headed the Corps of Engineers. Totten died suddenly of pneumonia and was posthumously brevetted major general, dating from the day preceding his death.
