Edward D. Townsend (1817-1893)
Edward Davis Townsend was a major general in the Union Army. A West Pointer (1837), Townsend became Scott's chief of staff in 1861. In 1863 he was named head of the adjutant generals department. Townsend was brevetted brigadier and major general for war services. He was chosen to represent the army at Lincoln's various funerals.
