John C. Trautwine (1810-1883)

John Cresson Trautwine was an engineer and author. As a young man he took advantage of the career possibilities offered by the development of the railroad. Later, Trautwine spent several years in Central America, looking for an inter-oceanic canal route. In 1871 he published the famous "Engineers' Pocket Book," which became a classic around the world.
