Benjamin S. Turner (1825-1894)
Benjamin Sterling Turner was raised as a slave and was forbidden a formal education, but managed to become educated and could read and write. In 1869, he was elected a city councilman in Selma, Alabama, and the following year won election as a Republican to the House of Representatives, becoming Alabama's first black member of Congress.
