On the left is George Alfred Townsend, who wrote under the name "Gath" and was most famous as a syndicated newspaper columnist and war correspondent. In the center is Mark Twain, the famous U.S. writer and humorist. On the right is David Gray, a sweet-natured friend of Twain who was from Buffalo, New York, where Twain once resided.
