David E. Twiggs (1790-1862)

A career soldier, David Emanuel Twiggs was known as "Old Davy," "The Bengal Tiger," or "The Horse." He fought in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk, Seminole, and Mexican wars. At the time that Lincoln was elected, Twiggs was a general in command of the United States forces in Texas. But he decided to join the Confederacy, and surrendered Union forces and supplies to the Texas Rangers. Twiggs was dismissed from the U.S. army in March, 1861, and later in that same month he was named major general in the Confederate Army. Suffering from ill health, he died in 1862.
