George Emory Tyson (1829-1906)

George Emory Tyson was a whaler and an Arctic explorer. In 1871 he left on the "Polaris" as assistant navigator on a remarkable journey. In North Greenland, Tyson, a meteorologist, eight seaman, two Inuits and their wives and five children, found themselves stranded on an ice floe. For six and a half months the party drifted in the darkness, almost starving, until they were rescued by the "Tigress" off Labrador in 1873.
