Joseph D. Webster (1811-1876)
Joseph Dana Webster joined the U.S. Army as a topographical engineer and fought in the Mexican War. Colonel of the 1st Illinois at the start of the Civil War, he fought at Forts Henry and Donelson. Webster was made brigadier general of volunteers in 1862. He was chief of staff to Grant and then to Sherman. Webster was brevetted major general of volunteers for war service.
