John Weiss (1818-1879)

John Weiss was an author, lecturer and Unitarian minister. His disjointed wit, poetic images, and explosive eloquence baffled and exasperated his parishioners, and, often finding himself without a parish, Weiss had to turn to writing and lecturing for income. His most substantial achievement was his biography of the Reverend Thomas Parker, "Life and Correspondence of Theodore Parker" (Ticknor & Fields, 1864). Weiss introduced German literature to New England with his translations of Schiller and Goethe. He was an outspoken abolitionist.
