Godfrey Weitzel (1835-1884)

Godfrey Weitzel was a major general of volunteers in the Union Army. He graduated second in the West Point class of 1855. Early in the Civil War he was assigned to Fort Pickens, Cincinnati, Washington, and New Orleans. Late in 1864 he was appointed head of the new 25th Corps, the only exclusively African-American corps in the history of the U.S. Army. Weitzel received the distinction of commanding the first troops to enter Richmond.
