James C. Welling (1825-1894)
James Clarke Welling was a journalist and educator. As a young man he edited and directed the "Daily National Intelligencer" in Washington, DC. Welling was president of St. John's College in Annapolis, MD, from 1867 to 1869, and then professor of English at the College of New Jersey. In 1871 he was named president of Columbian College, Washington, DC (now George Washington University). The university expanded greatly under Welling's tenure. Welling also taught the philosophy of history and international law.
