Henry B. Whipple (1822-1901)
Henry Benjamin Whipple was a Protestant Episcopal bishop who fought to reform the Native American system in the United States. In 1857 he accepted a call to organize a church among the homeless, orphans, railroad employees, and machinists of Chicago's south side and remained there for two years. In 1859 Whipple was elected the first bishop of Minnesota. His efforts on behalf of the Chippewa and Sioux garnered him a reputation as an expert on Native American reforms and he was invited to lecture throughout the U.S. and Europe. His Chippewa name was Straight Tongue.
