Elijah Viers White (1832-1907)

Elijah Viers White was a Confederate lieutenant colonel who was a determined fighter but something of a troublemaker. He was given permission to raise his own company for border service. Known as "The Comanches," the unit was highly successful but White's superiors found it lacking in discipline. The command, raised to a battalion, almost mutinied when assigned to a regular cavalry brigade. White's battalion fought at Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Mine Run, the Wilderness, Petersburg, and in the Shenandoah Valley.
