James I. Waddell (1824-1886)

James Iredell Waddell was a first lieutenant in the Confederate Navy. Before the outbreak of the Civil War he had spent decades in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to "special service" in the Confederate Navy and spent the greater part of the war capturing prizes in Australia and destroying whaling fleets in the Bering Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Waddell's ship, the "Shenandoah," finally lowered its flag in November, 1865, almost seven months after Lee's surrender.
