James H. Ward (1806-1861)
James Harmon Ward was a commander of the Union Navy. In order to keep Washington's supply lines open, the Navy created the Potomac Flotilla and named Ward as its head. In June, 1862, it was attacked by Brockenbrough's 40th Virginia. Ward was the only man killed and became the first Union naval officer to lose his life.
