Mrs. H. L. Bateman (1823-1881)
Frances Bateman was an actress, manager, and playwright. She is best known as the mother of Kate and Ellen, the famous Bateman children, who made their New York debut at ages six and four. Marketed by their father, Hezekiah Bateman, who was a theater manager and impresario, as well as by P. T. Barnum, the girls toured Europe and the United States. Although Kate retired from the stage in 1856, she returned in 1860 to play Evangeline in her mother's play of the same name in New York. When Mr. Bateman died in 1875, Frances Bateman took over the management of the Lyceum Theatre in London. She opened the 1875 season with "Macbeth," in which Kate played the lead role.
