Louis D. Watkins (1835-1868) and Wife
This is a portrait of Louis Douglas Watkins, a Union general, and his wife, of whom nothing is known. Watkins was promoted to brigadier general of volunteers in 1865 and continued in the regular army after the Civil War. The ruffles, flounces, and embroidery on Mrs. Watkins's dress were the height of fashion in the 1860s, as was her hoop skirt.
