Alfred R. Waud
Alfred R. Waud was a war correspondent and artist who sketched the Civil War. Among other scenes, Waud sketched the Federal charge on a stone wall held by the 37th Virginia at Kernstown. He was also a "Harper's Weekly" artist. In this photo by Mathew Brady, Waud holds a newspaper with the headline "War" and shoulders a knapsack with more copies spilling out. In a peculiar touch, shredded newspaper falls from the brim of his hat.
