Pauline Canissa
Pauline Canissa, an opera singer, enjoyed great popularity in the 1850s-70s. In April, 1876, she sang the part of Sieglinde in the first U. S. performance of Wagner's "Die Walkure" at the New York Academy of Music. Here she poses at the Howell studio in New York City, wearing an elaborate evening gown and a feather in her hair.
