Kate Claxton (1848-1924)

Kate Claxton was born Kate Cone and made her debut as an actress with Lotta Crabtree in Chicago. Claxton became a star in "Led Astray" in 1873. She was cast as Louise, the blind girl in "The Two Orphans" in 1874, the part with which she was identified for the rest of her life. For many years Claxton traveled at the head of her own company. In this photo from an unidentified studio the actress wears an elaborate dress while holding a fancy hat and fringed parasol, circa 1868.
