Hettie De Lee (b.1849)

Hettie De Lee was an actress who was born at sea to Italian parents. When her father died in 1864, she decided to make a stage career. De Lee spent some time studying at the Academy of Music in Albany. After the Civil War she joined Davenport's company in Savannah, playing chambermaid roles. In 1868 De Lee retired from the stage. Wearing an elaborate costume, she poses at the Howell studio in New York, circa 1870.
