Rosa Parks (1913-)
In 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man and was arrested and found guilty of disorderly conduct. As a result of her conviction a meeting was held at which it was decided that a bus boycott would be an effective way to protest the segregated bus service, the Montgomery Improvement Association was formed, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was selected as the new organization's president.
