Fanny Fern (1811-1872)
Fanny Fern was the pen name of Sara Payson Willis Parton who was an American novelist and newspaper writer. One of the first woman columnists, she was known for her satiric commentary on contemporary society. Fern's best-selling novel "Ruth Hall " was based on her own experiences. This unsentimental story showed that the hierarchical structure that she and other women were made to believe was God-given and immutable was actually a system constructed by men.
